You read that sentence as if that’s a good thing, but before you get all dismissive, try to remember that prop comedy existed before the comedian aka Scott Thompson who performs in Vegas and around the world as Carrot Top, and that prop comedy continues to exist everywhere else all the same. Well, maybe not all the same. As Al Harris, from Long Island, learned when he auditioned on last night’s episode of America’s Got Talent on NBC.

Harris introduced himself to the judges as a former corrections officer — Howard Stern gets off a “captive audience” jab before Harris himself does — and as if the producers had tipped Stern and everyone in the crew as to what would happen next, things don’t proceed as smoothly as Harris and the audience would like.

But Harris wouldn’t stop. Not even the four XXXXs from the judges, which cue the stage lights and music and mics to go dark and the show to stop, could keep Harris from showing off all of the corny hand-made and acquired props he had built punchlines around. Chuckles eventually ensue. The crowd even chants in his favor, despite what the judges thought. Hmmm.
